Balancing Act by Emily March

Genevieve Prentice is loving her life in Lake in the Clouds. She has made new friends, is close to her sister and is almost finished renovating her cabins. Her project in town, restoring an old theatre, is almost complete as well. She is a little unsure about a big milestone birthday approaching, but everything is still pretty quiet  in her life. That is until her daughter Willow shows up and turns Genevieve's life upside down. Not only will Genevieve start to question her own life, she must also work to find a new balance.

Willow is a widowed mother of two and is back home in Lake in the Clouds carrying a huge secret. She knows it time to tell her mom the truth about her marriage, but can she work up the courage? She finds a new friend unexpectedly in a reclusive neighbour whom she has a run in with, and maybe he is just the thing she needs in her life to move on. 

As a family wedding approaches, and new secrets are uncovered can Willow and Genevieve find a way to rekindle their close relationship they once had?

Emily March has been a favourite author of mine for a long time. Her series Eternity Springs is what encouraged my love of small town series a long time ago. Balancing Act is the second book in the Lake in the Clouds series, which so happens to be in a town close to Eternity Springs. I loved how the romance in the book was a slow burn, taking a friendship and turning it into a romance, slowly and thoughtfully. I appreciate that in novels which makes it more true to life. The characters were brilliant, and I loved the antics of the children. My thanks to Forever, Grand Central Publishing for my advanced copy which I read and reviewed voluntarily. Genevieve Prentice is at her whit’s end with her grown children. She has dedicated her life to raising and nurturing her family since her husband died leaving her a young widow with four children. Her family was happy until a problem arose with an inheritance from the children’s grandfather, and now her children are not speaking to one another and are deep in a legal battle with one another. Genevieve has had enough. On a whim she sells her house and everything in it and moves to Lake in the Clouds and invests in a lodge with her sister. It is time Genevieve puts herself first. She tells the children she is on a hiatus from the squabbling and refuses their phone calls. The children are worried she may have had a breakdown, but maybe this is just what Genevieve needs for both herself and her children.

Jake Prentice picked up the pieces when his father passed. Jake was young but he was the planner in the family, the fixer, the one who stepped in and took care of things. Now he is on a journey of finding out who he really is both to himself and his family. Jake is stressed, so he quits his job, packs up and finds himself at his mother’s lodge. When he invites the woman he fired, Tess Crenshaw to the lodge, he might have finally lost it, or maybe this was the best decision he ever made.

When I heard that Emily March had a new series called Lake in the Clouds I could not wait to start reading. Ms. March has been a favourite author of mine for years as I read through her Eternity Springs series. This new series, does not disappoint. A small town, a distressed family trying to put the pieces back together, new budding romances and idyllic scenery are just the right ingredients to take her readers on a new journey. My favourite part is that Lake in the Clouds is close to Eternity Springs so we do get a little visit from one of the most loved characters in a cameo appearance. He is rebuilding his life and is quite happy in the small town until one day he gets a call from an old friend. Boone’s life is about to change and in a big way. He takes some time to reflect on his decision and when driving home he comes up on a woman who looks like she might just jump off a cliff at Lovers Leap. He pulls over and something inside him wants to protect her. A good friend recently told him he can be “the light” in someone’s life, and this may just be his chance.

Hannah Dupree has left her home and her life behind three years ago after a devasting tragedy and is feeling displaced and is wondering if this is all her life will ever be. When she pulls over on the side of the highway at Lovers Leap, she is contemplating what her next step literally will be. When a handsome stranger pulls over, Hannah has no idea how this man and this small town will change her life forever.

Boone and Hannah so us just how when we think the road has ended, there is always another. This is a story of second chances, new beginnings and when all hope is lost, there is light right around the corner. This story was heart wrenching, yet heart warming and it was hard to put this novel down as I got wrapped up in these characters from the beginning of the book. It was also like coming home again to Eternity Springs as we also get to catch up with past characters and of course Celeste Blessing is the heart of this story as well. This has been one of my all-time favourite series and I am a huge fan of Emily March’s writing. This book was so beautifully written by Emily March and is the second book in the series “Eternity Springs: The McBrides of Texas”. I loved the story and the banter between Gillian and Tucker. It was fun to visit previous characters from the first book, yet the author does a brilliant job of catching you up if this is the first book you have read.
