My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Beatrice has left the city life behind her for a quieter life in southern West Virginia. She is finding her way on her small farm with her dog Ralph and her new herd of llamas bequeathed to her by a dear friend who has passed. Life is quiet in the hollow until Beatrice meets Clara.
Clara is a young girl who has been mistreated and abandoned for relatives to look after. Clara takes refuge in Beatrice’s home and slowly they both find the love and stability they both crave.
Tanner Fordyce also interrupts Beatrice’s quiet life by getting her to work on his biography. Tanner adds humor and spontaneity to Beatrice’s routine world.
The characters in the book are so well written. I could relate to Beatrice and found her character to be “real”. She was a good hearted person who is muddling through life trying to find her way as a middle aged woman. The supporting characters in the book are just average folk living in the hollow and you get drawn into both their stories and how they intertwine with Beatrice’s story. I loved the animals in the story as well as they all had interesting and fun personalities. The book ends with you wanting to grab the next book in the series to find out what happens with Beatrice and Clara. I applaud Melanie Forde for an outstanding novel that I absolutely loved. This is one book you just want to curl up and get lost in.

  1. So glad you enjoyed the novel and "got" Beatrice, for all her quirks. Thanks so much for your sharing your insights on such a well-crafted blog site.
