This novel by Beverley McLachlin will leave you breathless. Secrets, lies, betrayal, and a family torn apart will keep you turning the pages to see what lies beneath the truth. As a reader we get to see how Jilly’s character is evolving and get a firsthand look at the life of a criminal defense lawyer. I appreciate and admire Beverly McLachlin for bring her expertise and experience onto the pages of this fabulous thriller. The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave

When Hannah is handed a note that says, “protect her”, she does just that. Her husband Owen has gone missing, she is left with her stepdaughter Bailey, a teenager with an attitude, and Hannah must find to a way to figure out what just happened. She is on rocky ground with Bailey, but vows to do whatever it takes to keep her safe. When the Marshalls and FBI come knocking, and Hannah does not know who to trust, she has one choice and that is to run. When she finds out that her husband really is not who he said he was, she trusts her instincts and gets deeper into the web of deceit. Will Hannah end up trusting the authorities, or will she turn to the one man who has the power to destroy them but also the power to keep them safe.

This was such an amazing story. I loved the relationship between Hannah and Bailey and how they had to learn to trust each other to find out what really happened to Owen. As much as the story was about the disappearance of Owen, it was about a relationship between a stepmother and daughter. There were many surprises along the way as the mystery unravels which I loved. I could not put this book down. Laura Dave is a new author for me, but I will definitely be picking up her other novels to read as I adored her writing style. Hurry Home Book Review

 Hurry Home by Roz Nay

Alexandra has what she thinks is the perfect life. A great job as a social worker, an amazing boyfriend and awesome friends. Everything is going as planned until one day her sister Ruth shows up on her doorstep, pregnant and obviously running from something. Ruth has never had her life together. She was always running with the wrong crowd and getting into trouble, and that’s why the two sisters have been estranged for years.

When Ruth shows up, Alexandra vows that she will help her sister get back on her feet and out the door as soon as she can. She can’t have her upsetting the perfect life that she has worked so hard to achieve.

The one thing the sisters do share is a secret from the past that Alexandra does not want to surface. She will do everything in her power to keep the secret safe.

This book is one you just can’t put down. As the story unfolds you have a hard time knowing which sister is telling the truth. Ruth is definitely keeping secrets, but so is Alexandra. Only at the very end of the book do you find out the true story of the secret the sisters are hiding. I did not expect the twists and turns as the story begins to unfold, and I seriously could not put this book down. It was a fabulous unexpected read. Review: Fatal Inheritance

Fatal Inheritance by Rachel Rhys

Come back in time to 1948, post war London. This is where we meet Eve, a lonely housewife whose life is about the change. Eve is contacted by a lawyer that she has been left a share in an estate of someone she doesn’t know. Eve finds out she must travel to the French Riviera to find out the details of this strange bequest. When she arrives she meets the family of the man who has passed away and struggles to find out how she is involved. Eve also meets new and eclectic friends along the way that help her find out just how she came to be a part of this family. Throughout her journey she not only solves the mystery of the inheritance she finds a part of herself that she has lost along the way.
Rachel Rys wrote this book in such a way that you are immediately drawn into Eve’s story and all the characters involved in her discovery. I usually don’t read historical romances, but this book caught my eye and I thought I would give it a try. I am sure glad I did. I thought the story was brilliantly written and I can’t wait to read another one of her books. Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book to review.

Review: I'll Never Tell

 I'll Never Tell by Catherine McKenzie

The grown MacAllister children will come together again at the summer camp that their parents owned for a memorial for their parents who died in a tragic accident. They will also hear the reading of the will. Ryan, the only son, Margaux, Mary, Liddie and Kate the four sisters all arrive at the camp unsure of what will happen. Not only have they lost their parents but the presumed death of their friend Amanda some twenty years ago will also come back to haunt them. Along with Sean who has been a part of the family and still lives at the camp, they will have to face their fears, their insecurities and their faith in their family over the next few days. The story twists and turns until the very last page as you wonder what really happened to Amanda and how each of the MacAllister children played a part that horrible night.

I absolutely loved this story and the way that Catherine McKenzie wrote each character. The story mixes in present day and back in time to that tragic night so long ago. The story is told from the view point of each character along with Amanda’s story. I found it riveting trying to unravel the mystery along with the characters in the book. This is the first book I have read by Catherine McKenzie but it definitely won’t be the last. Thank you so much to Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book to review.
